Walter M. Ritger, 86
Walter M. Ritger, 86, of St. Anthony died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011 at the Kathy Hospice in the Town of Polk. He was born on the family homestead in St. Anthony on March 22, 1924 to the late John and Malinda (nee Ruffing) Ritger. On April 23, 1947 he married Victoria Sauer at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Allenton. Victoria preceded Walter in death on Oct. 21, 2004.
Wally was born and raised on the family homestead in St. Anthony. In 1935 he started hauling milk with his father. Shortly after their marriage, Wally and Vicky took over the family farm. In the early 1950s he began hauling cattle while continuing to farm. Wally remained ac-tive on the farm up until the time of his death.
Walter loved playing sheepshead and scot with his card clubs and spent many Sunday afternoons passing on his sheepshead skills and techniques to his grandchildren.
He is survived by his four children: Kathy Ritger of St. Anthony, Tom (Janice) of St. Anthony, Lorraine (Tom) Hefter of Allenton and Jim of St. Anthony; a son-in-law Wal-ly Theisen; and six grandchildren: Lisa (Chad) Heiden, Greg (fiancée Alys-sa Cash) Ritger, Kelly (fiancé Eric Muenchow) Ritger, Jill (Jake) Boettcher, Neil (Cheyenne) Hefter and Dean Hefter. He is further survived by his great-grandchildren: Caleb and Abby Heiden, Alex and Joe Hefter and baby Boettcher on the way, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Carl and Arleen Mueller of West Bend, Dan Sauer of Allenton and Merna Sauer of Hartford, and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents John and Malinda Ritger, his wife Victoria, his daughter Carol Theisen and a sister-in-law Mary Sauer.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011 at Resurrection Catholic Church in Allenton with the Rev. Richard Stoffel presiding. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Vis-itation will be from 4 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, at the church only. Memorials to the Kathy Hospice or the charity of the donor's choice are appreciated.
