Dorothy Gertrude Baumann

Dorothy Gertrude Baumann, 87, a longtime resident of Colville, Wash., passed away on Jan. 18, 2011, in Colville, Wash.

She was born on March 17, 1923, in West Bend, the daughter of Henry M. and Theresa (nee Melder) Peters.

Raised in West Bend, Dorothy attended school and graduated from high school there. She attended classes at St. Agnes School of Nursing in Fond du Lac and received her degree as registered nurse. Dorothy fell in love with Norbert W. Baumann and they were married on Nov. 14, 1945, at the Holy Angels Church in West Bend. They owned/operated a dairy farm near Halder for 16 years before they moved west and settled in Walla Walla, Wash. Dorothy worked for St. Mary’s Hospital in Walla Walla and received specialized training in coronary and intensive care. She moved to Colville in 1970 and worked at Mt. Carmel Hospital until her retirement in 1983.

Dorothy loved her work as a nurse so much that she kept up on health issues as a hobby. She loved the outdoors, especially working in her beautiful garden and flower beds. Dorothy was talented with her hands and knitted her family mittens, scarves and caps. She also crocheted many large afghans for all of her children and grandchildren. Dorothy loved her family with all of her heart, and she will be deeply missed.

She is survived by seven sons, Tom (Sue) Baumann, Gene Baumann, Jerome Baumann, James Bauman, all of Walla Walla, Wash., Bob (Kathy) Baumann of Weston, Ore., Fran (Mary) Baumann of Chewelah, Wash., and Norb (Trudy) Baumann of Colville, Wash., three daughters, Carol (Frank) Noal, Germaine (Steve) Brown of Walla Walla, Wash., and Barb Kinman of Puyallup, Wash.; her siblings, Donald (Harriet) Peters, Lillian (Tony) Ritger, Al (Edna) Peters, Francis (Rita) Peters and Henrietta (Joe) Schnitzler, all of Wisconsin; as well as 31 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Norbert in 2002; her parents; and her siblings, Raymond, Marie, Genevieve and Edmond.
