Verna E. Herriges, 90

Verna E. Herriges (nee Kern, formerly Felix), 90, of West Bend died Saturday, July 23, 2011 at the Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born April 6, 1921, in Hartford to the late John and Rose (nee Gitter) Kern and married Alphonse Felix on April 6, 1940, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in the Town of Wayne. Alphonse preceded her in death in August of 1988. She was then united in marriage to Carl W. Herriges on March 17, 1990, at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Carl preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 2004.

Following her marriage to Alphonse, they settled on a farm in St. Kilian before moving to West Bend 10 years later. She was employed as a salesperson at Badger Paint’s before working as a secretary for many years at Enger-Kress. She then worked in real estate sales before retiring.

Verna was very active at the Washington County Senior Center where she served on the board of directors. She also served on the board of directors at the Embassy in West Bend and served on the resident council at Cedar Bay East.

She enjoyed recreational activities including playing cards and wii bowling and liked following the Brewers and current events.

Survivors include her daughter Joanne “Josie” (Dr. Tom) Gobel of Fort Atkinson, her stepdaughter Sr. Rosemary Herriges O.S.F. of Kewaskum and four grandsons: Heinrich “Henry” (Wendi) Gobel of Cambridge, Wis., Jacob (Marti) Gobel of Milwaukee, Matthew (Jessica) Gobel of Onalaska and Daniel (Janice) Gobel of Raleigh, N.C. She is further survived by 11 great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law Cordell Kern of Kewaskum and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Verna is preceded in death by her parents, John and Rose Kern, her husband Alphonse Felix, her husband Carl Herriges, her brother Ralph Kern and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters in-law.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, July 28, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend with the Rev. Gerald Brittain presiding. Burial will be in St. Kilian’s Cemetery in St. Kilian. Visitation will be Thursday, at the church only from 11:30 a.m. until 1:15 p.m.
