Melvin A. Henke, 73

Melvin A. Henke, 73, of Hartford, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at his residence in the comfort of his loving wife of 50 years.

He was born March 22, 1938, in the town of Richfield to Emil and Margaret (nee Linden) Henke. Mel was united in marriage to Carole Christman on Aug. 19, 1961, at the First Congregational Church in Hartford.

Mel is survived by his wife Carole, his sons Scott (Laura) Henke of Hartford and Brian (Janet) Henke of Hartford, four grandchildren; Nolan, Grant, twins Seth and Haley, his siblings Robert Henke of Florida, Evarist "Slim" (Nancy) Henke of Hartford, Shirley Enders of Hartford, Pat (Vic) Rens of Waupun, Fred (Kathi) Bonde of Elkhart Lake and Jim (Mary) Bonde of Newton, his sister-in-law Doris Henke of Germany, his brothers-in-law Carmen (Maureen) Christman of Slinger and Kevin (Mary) Christman of Slinger. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Emil and Margaret, foster parents Kenneth and Sadie Galer who raised him, sisters Maple Henke and Betty (Henke) Keyes, his brothers Merlin (twin to Melvin), Roy and Ronald, and his mother and father-in-law Marvin and Loiree (nee Mathwig) Christman.

Mel enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Many hours were spent at the cabin in Portage. He enjoyed building anything with wood carpenter work, chainsaw carving, finishing work. He liked gardening and putting puzzles together. He had been a journeyman carpenter and drove semi for Jones Transfer Line and West Bend Transit service; he was a member of Teamsters Local 200. He served active duty with the 32nd Diision. at Fort Lewis, Wash. He was a member of the American Legion Post 19 Hartford and served as officer, color guard, and as a volunteer for brat frys.

The nursing staff of Aurora Medical Centre Hartford, Day Surgery Hartford and Milwaukee. Special thanks to the staff and nurses at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic, Slinger for the good humor and care of his Leukemia.

Memorial funeral services for Mel will be held Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, at 7 p.m. at the Shimon Funeral Home, 824 Union St. (Highway 83 N), Hartford with the Rev. Jeffrey Schimp officiating. Family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday from 4 p.m. until the time of the 7 p.m. service. Military honors will precede the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to The Milwaukee Blood Center of Southeast Wisconsin, for the blood and platelets supplied during his illness, special thanks to anyone who donates blood and platelets; or memorials to the Bran-don Youmans Eagle Scout Project, Veterans Memorial at Sawyer Park Hartford, a project which Mel had designed.
