Catherine (Kay) Becker, 76


Kay Becker, 76, passed away on the evening of May 11, 2011, surrounded by the love of her husband of nearly 52 years, Judge Richard T. Becker, her seven children and their spouses at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.

Kay was born on Sept. 17, 1934, to L.B. and Anne (nee Sutton) Boorman in Lemmon, SD. Her parents owned the local newspaper, The Lemmon Leader, for many years. Kay often worked at the Leader along with her surviving siblings, Jane Boorman of Washington, D.C. and Bruce (Patricia) Boorman of El Cajon, Calif.

She received a degree in education from Marquette University. While studying there, she played French horn and acted as the librarian for the music department. She met her husband, who was the bandís drum major, while there.

The couple married on June 20, 1959, at St. Maryís Catholic Church, Lemmon, S.D. They then lived and worked in Chicago for a brief time before returning to Judge Beckerís hometown, Hartford, to raise their family.

Kay was an avid teacher, both as a parent and in her work with St. Kilian School in Hartford, which all of her children attended and where she served as a substitute teacher, started their computer lab and was a fixture as the onsite grandmother to any student in need.

Kay is survived by her husband and her children: Jerome (Dr. Karen Hegmann, children: Grace, Richard, Claire), Thomas (Anne, children: Mikaela, Andrew, Delaney), Gregory (Kristine, children: Josh, Alyssa, Sam, Isabella), Ann Becker, Joseph (Cheri, children: Matt, Abby, Mary, Jane) Becker, Kathleen Harris (Jason, children: Jack, Cody, Sydney, Wyatt) and Margaret Swyers (Heath, child expected in July and code named "Champ"). She is also survived by Judge Beckerís step-mother, Teresa Becker, and Kayís brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (Maureen) Becker, Teri (Richard) Merkel, Bonnie (Thomas) Callen, Carl Gahlman and Paul (Sarah) Becker. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law, Mary Gahlman.

A memorial Mass of Christian burial for the public will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 3 p.m. at St. Kilian Catholic Church with Father David La Plante officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends at the church only on Sunday, June 12 from 12:30 p.m. until the 3:00 p.m. Mass.

The family extends special thanks to the first responders who served the couple so well at the accident scene, as well as the doctors and staff of Froedtert Hospital, who rendered such exceptional care in their time of need. Thanks also to Fr. Russ Tikalsky and Fr. David La Plante for comforts brought by them to the entire family.

The family extends their thanks for the many thoughts and prayers offered during these difficult times. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorials be addressed to The St. Kilian Education Endowment Fund, 428 Forest St., Hartford, WI 53027.
