LaVerne M. Ames, 82

LaVerne M. Ames (nee Gundrum), 82, of West Bend, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at the Horizon Hospice Unit at Columbia-St. Maryís Ozaukee Campus in Mequon after an 11 year battle with Multiple Myeloma.

She was born Aug. 2, 1928, on the family farm in St. Anthony to Paul and Anna (nee Marian) Gundrum,

LaVerne graduated from West Bend High School in 1945 and worked as a secretary at the West Bend Co. and for the Washington County School District.

On Nov. 24, 1951, she married Stephen W. Ames at Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend, exactly one year after meeting him. They settled in West Bend and raised a family of five children. They were charter members of St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church.

LaVerne worked for Kohlís Food Store as a delicatessen clerk for 16 years. She later worked as a crossing guard and in food service for the West Bend School District.

Her hobbies included traveling, cooking and quilting. She loved spending time with her 10 grandchildren.

Her husband Steve passed away on Oct. 16, 2004.

Survivors include five children, Julie (Gary) Halom of Superior, Russ (Stacy) of Beverly, Mass., Roy (Mary) of Broken Arrow, Okla., Janice (Brad) Lamers of Brookfield and Ellen (Dan) Hintz of Sussex; 10 grandchildren, Erik, Kaitlyn and Kyle Halom, Ben Ames, Tom and Stephanie Ames, Alex and Alyssa Lamers and Ryan and Aaron Hintz; a sister, Ruth Nennig; a brother, Paul (Carole) Gundrum; a brother-in-law, Bruce McCray of Houston; two other sisters-in-law, Mercia Gundrum and Helen Gundrum; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church with the Rev. Jeff Haines presiding. Burial will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church only on Monday from 4:30 p.m. until 6:15 p.m.
