Eunice
Eloise Montgomery, 91, passed away on May 10, 2011. She was a resident of
West Bend from 1959 to 2004. After many years of loving care by her
daughter Diane, in 2004 Mrs. Montgomery moved to The Forest at Duke, in
Durham, N.C., so that her daughter Jene could care for her.
Mrs. Montgomery is preceded in death by her husband, James Donald
Montgomery; her parents, Julie and Andrew Hatteberg; her sisters,
Elizabeth Hatteberg and Lorene Hatteberg Finch; her brother, Kenneth
Hatteberg; and her beloved daughter, Marilyn Montgomery Pitzner.
She is survived by two daughters, Diane Montgomery, of West Bend and Jene
Montgomery Goshaw, of Chapel Hill, N.C., as well as by her grandchildren,
Julie Pitzner Mattson of Maple Grove, Minn.; James Pitzner, of Maple Gove,
Minn.; Elizabeth Pitzner Hilton, of Trempealeau, Paul McDonald of Perth,
Scotland, Eric Fryklund, of Slinger, Sonya Fryklund Junk of Richfield,
David Goshaw, of Durham, N.C.; and Christina Goshaw Hinkle, of Chapel
Hill, N.C. She also is survived by 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Montgomery was born on June 10, 1919, in Albert Lea, Minn. She
graduated with honors from the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, Iowa,
where she was a violinist in the University Symphony
Orchestra and majored in foreign languages. In the 1950s, she taught
school in Appleton, where she instituted the first program of oral
instruction in foreign languages in the state. After her move to West
Bend, she continued teaching French and Spanish in the West Bend schools.
Mrs. Montgomery treasured her family and friends. Her family remembers her
as a devoted wife and a loving mother. She was a longtime member of St.
John’s Lutheran Church and Guild. She was an avid bridge player and
enjoyed crossword puzzles, sewing and knitting.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to their
favorite charity or to The Eloise Hatteberg Montgomery Memorial Fund,

The family will receive visitors on Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. until
noon at St. John’s Lutheran Church in West Bend. A memorial service will
be held at noon, immediately following visitation. Visitation and funeral
service will be at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 809 S. Sixth Ave., West
Bend, Wisconsin 53095.
