Vernon A. Wilk, 89, of West Bend, formerly of Random Lake died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at the Samaritan Health Center in West Bend.
He was born Sept. 22, 1923, in Random Lake to the late Arthur and Viola (nee Plaum) Wilk. In 1951 he married Joan Verwey in Racine. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he returned to Random Lake and ran the family business, Wilk Buick & Hardware, with his father.
Vernon and Joan made their home in Random Lake for 44 years before moving to West Bend in 1995. He was a long-time member of the Random Lake Fire Department, American Legion Hamm-Miller Post 145 and served as village clerk for a number of years.
He served his country during World War II as a bombardier first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 15th USAF, 720 squadron, 450th bomb group, and was based out of Manduria, Italy.
Vernon is survived by his three children, Bruce (Lyn) of West Bend, Denise (Randy) Hall of Coloma and Keith (Jane) of Appleton; and four grandchildren, Stacie (Matt) Castillo, Trevor (Jenn) Wilk, and Justin and Aaron Hall; and one great-grandchild, Megan Castillo.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Viola Wilk, sister Audrey, and his wife Joan.
Inurnment with military honors will take place in St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Batavia in the spring.
The Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend is serving the family.
