Harvey Freitag, 87
 

Harvey Freitag of Saukville passed away in the evening hours of Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee in Mequon surrounded by his loving family. He was 87 years old.

Harvey was born in the town of Grafton on Oct. 14, 1925, son of George Freitag and Sophie Keller Freitag. Harvey served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy, including serving on the USS Yorktown and in the Pacific Theater.

On Feb. 20, 1948, he married Ellen Bittner in Waukegan, Ill. Harvey worked for Gahan & Sons Construction, the village of Saukville and the Ozaukee County Highway Department, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of St. Peter’s UCC Church in Saukville, the Saukville American Legion Post 470 and a retired lieutenant/engineer of the Saukville Fire Department. His hobbies included carpentry, snowmobiling and camping. He loved spending time puttering in his workshop.

He is survived by his two children, Betsy (Rick) Ladwig of Grafton and Bill (Linda) Freitag of Saukville. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Jennifer Freitag of Saukville, Adam Ladwig of Phoenix and Ryan Ladwig of Port Washington; his sister-in-law, Dolores "Mutz" Freitag; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen; and two brothers, Roger (the late Mandy) and Harold Freitag.

Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 4, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s UCC, 166 W. Dekora St., Saukville, with Pastor Rebecca Johnston officiating. He will be laid to rest with military honors in Union Cemetery in Saukville. A time of gathering will be held at the church today, Dec. 4, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Eernisse Funeral Home, Port Washington, is honored to serve the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Peter’s UCC or a charity of the donor’s choice.
