Max E. Derby,
Max E. Derby, 89, of Hartford, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2012. He was born Jan. 26, 1923, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Charles and Isal (nee White) Derby.
At the age of 19, Max enlisted and served our country in the United States Marines from 1942-1946, serving in the Pacific Campaign throughout the Mariana Islands. He married Marian Thiel, of Hartford, on Aug. 26, 1946. They met at the Great Lakes Naval Center. After the war and their marriage, they took up residence in Hartford where Max worked at Libby’s Canning Company, to eventually own and operate his own company.
He loved to golf, hunt and fish, and enjoyed being in the great outdoors. Max had a long and happy retirement.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Marian and his son-in-law Robert Gatlin. Dearest father of Gerald (Sue) Derby of Chenequa, Sharon Gatlin of Eau Claire and Cynthia (Mike) Hein of West Allis, and precious grandfather of seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also survived by two sisters, Glendora Horwath and Patricia (Robert) James, all of Blakesburg, Iowa.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home – Hartford. Funeral Service will follow at the funeral home at 1 p.m. the Rev. Michael Tess will officiate. Interment at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Make a Wish Foundation or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
