Thomas ‘Tom’ R. Miller, 64 Thomas "Tom" R. Miller of Garfield Avenue in Port Washington passed away while surrounded by family at Horizon Hospice in Mequon early Sunday morning, Feb. 5, 2012. He was 64 years old. Tom was born in Milwaukee on Nov. 15, 1947, the son of F. Robert and Angeline Mueller Miller. After graduating from St. John’s Cathedral High School with the class of 1966, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Tom graduated with his bachelor’s degree and later attained his master’s degree from UWM. On Jan. 15, 1972, Tom was united in marriage with Diane Barbaras at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Milwaukee. The couple moved to Grafton and later to Port Washington in 1977. Tom became the band director at Webster Transitional School in Cedarburg in the fall of 1972. He retired after 31 years of introducing children to the wonderful world of music. Tom was a member of St. Boniface Episcopal Church in Mequon, where he was an active member of the church choir. Tom played trombone in the Lakeshore Symphonic Band, as well as playing in and directing the Port Washington City Band. He was the founder and director of the Tri-County New Horizons Band, as well as having been a Wisconsin State Solo and Ensemble judge. In recent years, Tom had become an excellent baker and challenged himself to make different cuisine in the kitchen. He was also a longtime member of the morning swim group at the District Aquatic Center in Port Washington. Tom was a lifelong handyman who enjoyed fixing things for his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Diane of Port Washington; their two children, Colleen (Tony) Groh of Mayville and Eric (Marie) Miller of Green Bay; and two grandchildren, Ethan Groh and Nora Miller. He is further survived by two sisters, Juanita Malloy and Shirley Miller, both of Milwaukee; a brother, Jim (Nancy) Miller of Hartford (formerly of Milwaukee); sister-in-law, Nancy Barbaras also of Milwaukee; nieces, nephews, other relatives, former students and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, at St. Boniface Episcopal Church, 3906 W. Mequon Road, Mequon. Father Kenny Miller will preside. Tom will be inurned in the St. Boniface Columbaria following the service. The family will receive visitors at the church Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers.
