Donald L. Gonring, 74


Donald L. Gonring, 74, of West Bend died Monday, Feb. 20, 2012 at Riverway Place. He was born Sept. 23, 1937 in West Bend to the late Peter and Hildegard (nee Wiedmeyer) Goning and married Patricia A. Cooper on Dec. 31, 1960 in West Bend.

Don worked at McDonald-Douglas in St. Louis where he spent time on working on the Gemini Space Program. He was proud to serve the city of West Bend as an alderman then as mayor from 1981 until 1987. He loved baseball, playing for many years, even in the over-50 league, and was also a Little League coach. Don was an avid sports fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

He was a member of the Fr. Casper Rehrl Council 1964 Knights of Columbus, past president of the West Bend Noon Kiwanis, past president of the Toastmasters and helped found the Exodus House. Don was also a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Patricia, four children: Ann (Matt) Elizabeth-Nagel of Greendale, Patrick of West Bend, Joan Gonring of West Bend and Thom of Milwaukee, and six grandchildren: Brad (Nicole) Gonring, Heather Luedtke, Megan Brink, Tim Gonring, Andrew Gonring and Nicole Gonring. He is further survived by his siblings: Carol Rohringer of Winnipeg, Alberta, Canada, Rita (Phil) Hanson of West Bend, Denis (Ann) Gonring of West Bend and Alan (Noreen) Gonring of Kewaskum, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Erlene (Lee) Herriges of Campbellsport, Mike (Jean) Naumann of Oconomowoc, Jim Naumann, Terri (Bob) Hug of West Bend, Tammy (Ron) Leston and Barbara Gonring of New Berlin, and nieces, nephews and other relatives, and friends.

Don was preceded in death by him parents and his brother James.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Visitation will be Wednesday at the funeral home from 4-7 p.m. and also Thursday from 9-9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials to the Exodus House are appreciated.
