Robert H. Bechwar Sr., 89, of West Bend died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 at the Kathy Hospice. He was born April 16, 1922 in Barton to the late George and Hendrina (nee Koenings) Bechwar and married Mary M. Schalles on June 21, 1947 at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church.
Bob served in the U.S. Army in Africa and Europe during World War II. Following his discharge he was employed at the West Bend Company for 42 years, retiring in 1985. Bob loved baseball and played in the Rock River League, for the Barton A.C. in the Land O’ Rivers League and West Bend Lithia in the Land O’ Lakes League. He also coached Senior Little League for 10 years.
He was a member of the Fr. Casper Rehrl Council 1964 Knight’s of Columbus, the West Bend Lodge 1398 Loyal Order of the Moose, the Fred A. Schaefer Post 1393 V.F.W., the Lt. Ray Dickop Post 36 American Legion, the St. Vincent DePaul Society and the Barton Historical Society.
Bob is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary, six children: Robert Jr. of Slinger, Timothy (Cindy) of West Bend, David of West Bend, Paul of West Bend, Stephen (Birgit) of Medford, Ore. and Margaret Whatley of West Bend, and 6 grandchildren: Benjamin (Amy) Bechwar, Mara (Andy) Brunner, John Whatley, Alex Whatley, Julia Bechwar and Niklas Bechwar. He is further survived by his brother-in-law John (Beth) Schalles of Toledo, Ohio, a sister-in-law Rosemary Schalles of West Bend and nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents George and Hendrina Bechwar, two sons: John and Matthew and his brother George.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at 7 p.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Rev. Gerald Brittain presiding. Visitation will be Thursday, at the church only from 5-6:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials to the Kathy Hospice or the charity of the donor’s choice are appreciated.
