Genevieve C. Matenaer, 80|
Genevieve C. "Gene" Matenaer, nee Wondra, 80, of the town of Barton, died on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 at Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital. She was born on Oct. 13, 1931 in LeRoy to the late Kilian and Cecilia (nee Gindt) Wondra.
Following her marriage to Norman A. Matenaer on Jan. 2, 1954 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mayville, the couple settled in the West Bend area. Gene worked as an admissions clerk at St. Joseph’s Community Hospital, retiring in 1992 after many years of service.
In addition to being a devoted and loving wife, she cherished her children, grandchildren and later great-grandchildren. Over the years, she attended many different activities and events in support of her family. She also was a caring sister and valued the friendships she made throughout her life.
Gene had a very successful green thumb. Her family and friends benefited from her vegetable and flower gardens. She also enjoyed dancing, spending her last day polka dancing with her husband and close friends.
She was a member of the Homemaker’s Club, the Good Samaritan Guild, the Christian Women’s Confraternity at St. Mary Parish and along with her husband, a Eucharistic minister, distributing Communion to residents at the Health Care Center of Cedar Community. She also was active and involved with the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary and an active member of We Love to Dance.
Survivors include her husband Norman; three children Michael (Pamela), Dale (Debra) and Cheryl (Steven) Beistle, all of West Bend; 10 grandchildren Matthew (Rachel), James (MaryBeth), Paul (Meg), Mark (special friend Vanessa Flaig), Peter, Alexander, Angela (special friend Eric Lind), Janelle (Andrew) Kieffer, Alissa (Christopher) Strange and Nicole Beistle (fiance Zachary Fischer); eight great-grandchildren, Lucia, Lauryn, Audra, Monica, Sophia, Augustine and Felicity Matenaer and Mollie Kieffer; five brothers and sisters Florence (Wilbert) Gitter of Fond du Lac, Helen Thimm of Hartford, Leo Wondra of LeRoy, Cecilia (Joseph) Belligan of West Bend and Albert (Patricia) Wondra of Mayville; 10 brothers-andsisters-in-law: Angeline Wondra, Mary Wondra, Alice Wondra, Del (James) Preston, Leona (Alan) Batzler, Elizabeth Matenaer, Estelle Matenaer, Steven (Margaret) Matenaer, Mary (Paul) Wassenberg and Carol (Donald) Winninghoff; other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers Arnold, Edward, Raymond and Paul and brothers-andsisters-in-law Walter Thimm, Sally Wondra, Francis Matenaer, Adeline (Edward) Volm, Ralph Matenaer and Ray Yarnig.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment will be at a later date at Washington County Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the church only on Sunday from 3-5:45 p.m. Masses or memorials to the charity of the donor’s choice appreciated.
