Melvin J. Scherr, 63

Melvin “Butch” J. Scherr, 63, found peace surrounded by his family at the Kathy Hospice on Sunday, June 17, 2012, after a brief, but courageous battle with brain cancer.

Butch was born on Jan. 12, 1949, in Hartford. He attended St. Peter’s Grade School in Slinger and graduated from Slinger High School with the class of 1967. In August 1969, Butch was drafted into the U.S. military and proudly served his country for three years.

On Nov. 9, 1974, he married his life partner, Marlene Bohn, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Slinger. Shortly thereafter, they relocated to West Bend where they raised their family. Butch’s greatest accomplishments were the births of his two children.

Butch’s early years were filled with softball games and tournaments. His love for the game allowed him to travel across the country playing with the Slinger Foundry and the Heidel’s II softball teams.

On “Friday the 13th,” 1987, Butch bowled his one and only “300” game. He also enjoyed vacations and “road trips” with family and friends. He loved the game of golf, fishing, trap shooting, watching a “good” NASCAR race and “father-son” deer hunting with the “Hawkins Hunting Group.”

Those who knew Butch will always remember his enormous love for sweets even as his appetite diminished. The only true shopping Butch enjoyed would be one that involved searching for a new baseball cap or hat to add to his already-bulging collection.

Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

Butch will be deeply missed by his wife, Marlene; his loving children Tabitha (Bryan) Hansen of West Bend and Cody (Katie) Scherr of West Bend; and his treasured grandchildren Addison and Mason Hansen and Kira Scherr.
He will also be missed by his brothers, Rick “Crusher” (Sara) Scherr, Mark “Scratch” Scherr, Robert (Carlene) Scherr, Dale (Mary) Scherr, and his sister Nancy (David) Elding; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and countless friends.

Butch is preceded in death by his mother Shirley (nee Jeffords) Scherr, mother-in-law Marian (nee Schodron) Bohn and his sister-in-law Julie (nee Klein) Scherr.

A funeral service for Butch will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel, 1420 W. Paradise Drive, in West Bend with Reverend Carol Hansen presiding. Visitation will be from 4-6:45 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at the funeral home only. Interment will take place at Washington County Memorial Park.

In honor of Butch’s wonderful care, memorials in his name can be given to the Kathy Hospice.

The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital and the Kathy Hospice for their compassionate care. Without their guidance and support during this difficult time, we would have been lost.
