Howard Black, 87


Howard Black, age 87, of Hartford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at his residence.

He was born January 23, 1925, in Hartford to Fred and Irene (Brandt) Black. Howard was united in marriage to Anna Mae Lechner on June 22, 1946, at St. Kilian Catholic Church. She preceded him in death in 2000.

Howard was a good neighbor, businessman, and community leader. He served as the captain of the Hartford Football team, business owner of Black’s Flower Shop, President of Lion’s Club, and member of the Hartford Country Club, board member of the local food pantry, and a strong supporter of every church social.

Howard was a World War II veteran in the Army and served with the 180th infantry regiment, 45th infantry division in Europe, awarded the combat infantryman badge and the bronze star for combat operations in Italy and also participated in the landings at Anzio and Southern France.
Howard was a devoted family man, endearing grandfather and great grandfather and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his four children Thomas Black, Mary Lee Rieley, Mark (Mary) Black and Bruce (Tracie) Black; grandchildren Kim (Drew) Eckmeyer, Elizabeth (Kevin) Lauterbach; Jeffrey (Kendra) Reichle, Melissa (Mark) Reichle, Jared (Stacy) Black, Carly (Eric) Shipley, Stephanie Black (fiancé Ryan Mc-Elligott), Quentin Black (close friend Leah) and Whitney Black; six great-grandchildren, Emma Eckmeyer, Oliver Eckmeyer, Gabriel Lauterbach, Grady Lauterbach, Bianka Reichle, and Zander Pundsack. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Howard will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2012, at St. John United Church of Christ, 228 W. State St., Hartford, with the Rev. Jack Freiheit officiating. Family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, June 29, 2012 from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home and on Saturday at the church from 9-10 a.m.

Interment at St. Kilian Cemetery.
