Charles "Chuck" Himes, 85, of West Bend, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012, at his residence.
He was born on May 5, 1926, in Leaf River, Ill., to the late Charles and Margaret (nee Beck) Himes. Chuck served in the U.S. Navy as a signalman during WWII. He was united in marriage to Mary Lou Gelhar on July 28, 1953, in Waukegan, Ill.
Chuck and Mary Lou owned and operated Chuckalou Supper Club in Jackson for many years. Chuck also worked at the Washington County Department of Social Services until retiring in 2000. Chuck and Mary Lou volunteered at the Albrecht Free Clinic and Aurora Visiting Nurse Association for many years. Chuck also enjoyed volunteering at the Barton School Reading Program. Chuck and Mary Lou received numerous volunteer awards for their dedication.
Chuck was a member of 5th Avenue United Methodist Church and he was a lifetime member of the Fred A. Schaefer VFW Post No. 1393 and the Henry F. Gumm American Legion Post No. 486.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; a daughter, Linda (Robert) Neuy of West Bend; two granddaughters, Lisa (Jeff) Simmelink of Kewaskum and Megan (Pat) Hoff of West Bend; five great-grandchildren , Charles Neuiszer, Danielle Neuiszer, Emily Halterman, Ian Camarillo, and James Camarillo; a brother, Noel (Connie) Himes of Arizona; three brothers-in-law, Frank (Elaine) Gelhar of Iowa, Ralph Gelhar of Illinois, and Harry (Kathy) Gelhar of Illinois; a sister-in-law, Monica (Laurie) Plaskan of Florida; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Lorraine Gelhar.
A funeral service in remembrance of Chuck will be held on Thursday, March 29, at 1 p.m. at Fifth Ave. United Methodist Church, 323 S. 5th Ave., West Bend. The Rev. Wesley Falk will officiate and entombment will follow at Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of service with a VFW and American Legion walk through at 12:45 p.m.
