Mary J. Rate, 93|
Mary J. Rate (formerly Czaja, nee Kejwan), 93, of West Bend, passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2012. She was born in Milwaukee on June 14, 1918, to the late William and Margaret (nee Kahut) Kejwan. She was raised in Milwaukee and moved to Kewaskum in 1942 with her first husband, Edward Czaja. They owned and operated Eddieís Meat Market in West Bend from 1945-71. Edward passed away in 1976. On June 14, 1980, she married Roland Rate and they moved to the West Bend area. Roland passed away in 2000.
She was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Parish, where she was often a greeter, Eucharistic minister and member of Young at Heart. She was also a member of the Christian Womenís Society, West Bend Homemakerís Club and past president of Christian Motherís Society at Holy Trinity Church in Kewaskum.
She is survived by her children, Diane (Jerome) Spaeth of West Bend, Richard (Mary) Czaja of Pittsville Sr. Mary Ann Czaja of Tarbaro, N.C., Edward (Charmaine) Czaja of Greenville, James Czaja of Ogdenburg, Joann (Perry) Koth of Kewaskum, Susan (Peter) Checki of Oshkosh, Luann (Dr. Kevin) Dunn of Brookfield, Roseann Czaja of Eau Claire; step-children, Gerald (Mary Kay) Rate of Kewaskum, Fred (Marie) Rate of Slinger; 23 loving grandchildren; 28 special great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren; siblings, Michael Kejwan of Missouri, Helen Barringer of Alabama, and Rose (Tom) Tormey of Waukesha; sistersin-law, Grace Rate of West Bend Eleanor Czaja of West Allis, and Ella Case of Florida; brother-in-law, Otto Kohl of West Bend. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her brother, John Kejwan; daughter-in-law, Lisa Czaja; and step-grandson, Brian Rate.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini (1025 S. Seventh Ave., West Bend) with the Rev. Nathan Reesman presiding. The visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 2, from 3-7 p.m. at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel (1420 W. Paradise Drive, West Bend) with a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. An additional visitation will be held at the church on Thursday, May 3 from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tarboro Community Outreach Center (701 Cedar Lane, Taboro, N.C. 27886).
