Reuben John Schmahl, 98

Reuben John Schmahl, 98, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012.

He was born to the late John and Amanda (nee Emerich) Schmahl on April 2, 1914, in Jackson and graduated from West Bend High School. Reuben spent most of his life operating and managing his dairy farm in Jackson.
He felt privileged to serve the people of his community in several roles and capacities. He dedicated his time to town and county government for the majority of his life, including serving 44 years as town of Jackson supervisor including 38 years as town chairman. His stewardship to the county also included his leadership on the Washington County Board of Supervisors for 45 years, including 22 years as County Board chairman.

In addition, he served on the Jackson School Board, Fire Department, Wisconsin Town Association, Wisconsin Highway Committee Association, St. Joseph’s Hospital Board and Wisconsin Counties Association. He was an active member of SEWRPC Regional Inter-Government Committee, Washington County Historical Society and West Bend Kiwanis. He also served as director and chairman of Bank of Jackson (now Associated Bank), director of Cedarburg Insurance Company, and chairman of Wisconsin Farm Progress Days for Washington County. In addition, he was actively involved in membership and leadership positions at his church (Peace UCC, Kewaskum) and the Jackson Area Businessmen Association.

Reuben established scholarships at West Bend Columns, University of
Wisconsin - Washington County, Moraine Park Technical College and Lakeland College to assist students in reaching their goal of graduation, as well as a fund to assist others through the West Bend Community Foundation.

As an elected official and public servant, Reuben found that humor or a short story prior to any serious discussion and debate eased people’s minds after which the business at hand could be addressed. Many looked forward to his next new joke or quip. He enjoyed singing (i.e. Barbershop Chorus, church choir), traveling, reading and spending time with his family.

Reuben is survived by his son, John (Margaret “Micky”) Schmahl; granddaughter, Amanda. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Selma (nee Borgman); and sisters, Lorane (Clarence) Groth, and Gertrude Schmahl. He is further preceded in death by his special friend Dora (nee Mutz) Schleif.

The funeral service for Reuben will be held on Sunday, May 20, 2012, at 6 p.m. at Peace United Church of Christ (343 First St., Kewaskum, WI 53040) with Rev. Eric Kirkegaard presiding. The visitation will be held at the church Sunday, May 20, from 3-6 p.m. Interment will take place at New Hope UCC Cemetery in Jackson on Monday, May 21, at 10 a.m.
