Ralph E. Malach, age 80, of West Bend and formerly of Ashland, passed away Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at Kathy Hospice in West Bend. He was born July 28, 1932, in Lugerville, the son of Samuel and Anna (Smetak) Malach.
When he was 4 years old, his family moved to Park Falls and in 1950, he graduated from Lincoln High School, Park Falls. Ralph enlisted in the United States Navy and completed boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and then attended Naval Hospital Corps School. He served at various naval medical facilities and then was transferred to the Marine Corps training center at Camp Pendleton, Calif., where he completed basic Marine Corps and field medical training, after which he joined the First Marine Corps Division in Korea. After Ralph was discharged from military service, he attended Northland College in Ashland.
On July 9, 1955, he married Mary Lou Hetfeld. Ralph then worked 21 years at Columbia Furniture Co., in Ashland. He and his wife, Mary Lou, purchased and then operated the Hillmor Supper Club for 12 years. Ralph was active in the Tavern League of Wisconsin and served on the state board and served as the Northern Zone vice president. He also worked for Tervo Motors and Von Holzen Pontiac Buick GMC. At the age of 62, he retired and did part-time work for 16 years at the Ashland County Aging Unit as a bus driver. After the passing of his wife, Mary Lou on Feb. 23, 2008, he moved to West Bend to be closer to his younger grandchildren to see them in their school and sports activities.
He is survived by two daughters, Carrie (Phil) Pierce, West Bend, and Paula (Dan) Vaughan, Hustisford; three sons, Ralph (Clara) Malach Jr. and Scott (Arlene) Malach, both of Ashland, and Michael Malach of Green Bay; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Ella “Toni” Boutwell, Ashland; a brother, Renny (Rosemary) Malach, Missoula, Mont.; a close cousin, Beatrice (Jerry) Johnson, Park Falls; a brother-in-law, Clarence “Mickey” (Lucille) Hetfeld, Grass Range, Mont.; and nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, Mary Lou, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lloyd and Calvin; and a close brother-in-law, Bill Boutwell.
The memorial service will be held 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at Saron Lutheran Church in Ashland. The Rev. Paul Simmons will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
