Mavis M. Schmidt, 87

Mavis M. Schmidt (nee Krahn, formerly Olson) of West Bend died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at Froedtert Health St. Joseph’s Hospital in the town of Polk. She was born May 8, 1925, in Marathon City, to the late Frank and Walinda (nee Sonnenberg) Krahn.

In 1940, she came to West Bend and was married to Norman Olson in 1941. Together they managed the former Marmac Hotel until 1954. She then moved to Milwaukee where she became a beautician.

On June 4, 1955 she married Harvey F. Schmidt in Milwaukee and settled back in West Bend in 1957.

Together they operated an adult family home for many years. They also owned and operated the Candlewick Lounge in Hartford for four years before owning and operating the Schmidtselhaus in downtown West Bend for nine years until their retirement.

Mavis was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active in arts and crafts with the Trinity Ladies. She was an avid bowler and served as president of a Weiland’s Ladies League.

Mavis is survived by her three children: Karen (Dale) Bell of West Bend, Tom Olson of Wheaton, Ill., and Bryan (Margaret) Olson of Kewaskum; four grandchildren: Tammy Jo (Mike) Werner, Thomas (Ingrid) Dean, Tory (Carrie) Olson and Terry (Michele) Olson; 11 great-grandchildren; and three greatgreat- grandchildren. She is further survived by her three sisters: Ruby Bever of West Bend, Virginia Simpson of Athens, Wis. and Marilyn (Richard) Backhaus of West Bend, and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Walinda Krahn, her husband Harvey on Oct. 28, 2012, her granddaughter Barbara, and her siblings Bert Krahn and Vanny Steinmetz.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at 3 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend with the Rev. David Schoob officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends for a period of visitation on Saturday from 1-2:45 p.m. The family has requested memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Washington County Humane Society.
