Robert David McLean, 90

Bob McLean, 90, died peacefully in his home in Hartford on April 21, 2013.

He was preceded in death by his parents William and Elizabeth (nee Logan) McLean; five brothers: Finlarig “Logan,” Menzi, Lockland “Scott,” Arden and Thomas McLean; and his five sisters: Agnes Hegge, Margaret Gates, Silver “Silvia” Saecker, Christine Metcalf and Iva Shish.

Bob was born on Feb. 16, 1923, in Whitewater. He graduated from high school at the Whitewater State Teacher’s College, received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Bob married Marilyn “Mitzi” (nee Unterholzner) McLean on July 3, 1953, and they were married for 59 years, living in a variety of Midwest cities and eventually settling in Hartford in 1971.

He started working for the Milwaukee Railroad the day after high school and worked for them for 29 years with an interruption during World War II when he served as a PFC from May 1, 1943, until his honorable discharge in February 1946. After working for the railroad, he took a job as school business manager at Hartford Union High School and worked there for 17 years. Retiring from Hartford Union High School, he then worked for Shorewood Schools as an interim business manager for one year.

He was proud of his Scottish heritage.

Bob took his family to Scotland to teach them about their heritage and took his family to the Gulf Coast every year over spring break. Everything he did revolved around his love for his wife and family.

Bob enjoyed helping others, was a member of the Hartford Rotary Club since 1971, serving terms of every office in the club. He was also the district financial officer for many years. One of the things he enjoyed was working with people from other cultures. Bob and Mitzi invited many Rotary international exchange students to live in their home over the years and had two granddaughters that were exchange students through his club. He was a United Way chairperson, a driver for the hospital van and a Schauer Center volunteer.

He played sheepshead every third Thursday for 40 years and golfed with his pals twice a week if the temperature was above 45 degrees.

Bob is survived by his wife, Marilyn D. (Unterholzner) McLean, his son Dr. Andrew R. (Victoria) Mc-Lean, his daughter Dr. Elizabeth M. McLean, his grandchildren, Mindy (Tony) Necci, Iva (Joseph) Plumley, Ginger (Michael) Auchter, Ariana Allexi and Orion Allexi, and his great-grandchildren Cole and Ava Auchter, and Madeline and Frederic Plumley.
