Hans W. Schmelzling

Hans W. Schmelzling, 76 of West Bend, passed away on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at The Kathy Hospice, with his wife and family by his side. He was born on July 29, 1937, the son of the late Hans H. and Elli (Heise) Schmelzling in Menasha.

He graduated from Menasha High School class of 1955, then attended the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley from 1955 to 1957. He completed his education at UW-Madison graduating with a B.B.A. degree in 1959. After college, he was on active duty with the Wisconsin National Guard 32nd Division.

Employment with the West Bend Company brought Hans to West Bend where he worked in several sales departments. In 1961, he was recalled to active duty and was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Wash. Upon his return to West Bend he continued his employment with the West Bend Company until 1972. In May of 1972, he started employment with the former General Clinic of West Bend (now Aurora Health Center) as clinic manager where he was employed for more than 24 years. During those years, he was a member of the West Bend Rotary, Washington-Ozaukee County Personnel Manager Association, West Bend Toastmasters Club serving as secretary and president, and Wisconsin Medical Group Management Association. He was a director of Wisconsin Rural Health Association.

He married the love of his life, Judith (Kasten). They were blessed to have celebrated 50 wonderful years together. Throughout the years he enjoyed traveling to different places with his wife and children, especially to Jamaica. Hans was very supportive of his childrenís educational and athletic
achievements, telling them often how proud he was of them. His family was the center of his life. Hans further enjoyed fishing, hiking, gardening and most sports events.

He is survived by his wife, Judy, and their two children, Amy (Robert) Berken of West Bend and Steven (Rada) Schmelzling of Glendale; five grandchildren, Sarah, Elizabeth and Matthew Berken, and Alexander and Nolan Schmelzling; along with other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law, Henry and Julia (VanEnbergen) Kasten.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors and nurses for the wonderful care given to Hans and a special thank you to Dr. Vukelich and Dr. Smale. Also, the family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Kathy Hospice for their compassionate and loving care.

A private memorial service was held in remembrance of Hans. Memorials to The Kathy Hospice (3200 Pleasant Valley Road, West Bend, WI 53095) or Our Saviorís Lutheran Church (1044 S. Silverbrook Drive, West Bend, WI 53095), or a charity of your choice are appreciated by the family.
