Chester C. Scherf Sr., 90

Chester C. Scherf Sr. went home to our Lord on Oct. 29, 2013, in Indiana at the age of 90. He was born on Sept. 6, 1923, in Cedarburg. He served in the Air Force, and on discharge from the military, he worked for American Can Company for many years.

A graveside service with military honors was held Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Garden of Memories, 4207 E. Lake Ave., Tampa, Fla. The family requests any donations be made to the Alzheimerís Foundation of America.

Chester was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Anna Scherf; wife, Gloria; and sister, Eunice (Scherf) Goeppert. He is survived by two sons, Chester C. Jr. and Gregory L. of Indiana; one daughter, Gay-Dawn of Florida; brother, Stewart (Louise) Scherf of Saukville; sister, Vivian (Scherf) Laabs of Cedarburg; and sister-in-law, Zena Arden of Florida. He is further survived by grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Chester was a delivery boy for Jochemís Grocery Store on Washington Avenue as a young boy. He was a Milwaukee Journal manager for the Cedarburg area with the Paper Shack on Western Avenue. Stewart and Vivian would help stuff papers during the week for adding to the Sunday Journal. Their reward was a trip to Silver Lake in West Bend on a hot day. Chester was a member of a Cedarburg amateur hardball team in the 1950s with Kiekhaefer Mercury as their sponsor. Stewart and Vivian shagged foul balls at the games.

Chester loved to play his accordion.

After his wife Gloria died, he moved back to Wisconsin and lived with Stewart and Louise in Saukville for about seven years.
