Dr. Thomas C. Hayter, 81


Dr. Thomas Conrad Hayter was born on Jan. 26, 1931, to Esther Volland Hayter and H. Clifton Hayter in Shawano. Tom graduated from Shawano High School in 1949. He attended Ripon College from 1949 to 1950. He transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1951. He earned a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Ph.D. in food and life science.

Tom married Gerda Jean Tonkin, Sept. 17, 1953, and in February they moved to Fort Gordon, Ga., to complete his ROTC commitment. As a 2nd lieutenant, he was sent to Korea in 1954 and served in the 772nd Company B in the military police and worked on the exchange of war dead. He served the balance of his service having made 1st lieutenant as a military police officer at Fort Sheridan, Ill.

Tom was employed in Sherman, Texas, by Anderson Clayton & Co. They returned to Madison so Tom could once again return to the university to obtain his MS and Ph.D. Upon graduation Tom was employed by General Mills as a research scientist for 26 years in Golden Valley MN. Tom retired in 1989 and 11 days later became Director of R&D for the Baba Company in Tulsa, Okla., and retired in 1997. They lived one year in Phoenix and returned to Mequon where they lived for eight years. Then they moved to Appleton and Sun City Center, Fla. Tom became a volunteer with the emergency squad as a first responder and ambulance driver. Tomís favorite pastimes were fishing, woodworking, doing home projects, crocheting and reading, mostly history and Civil War stories. He greatly enjoyed the computer and listening and going to operas.

Tom is survived by his wife, Gerda; daughter Jane E. Hayter Keily (Patrick), Mequon; and the best grandson any grandpa could have, Thomas P. Keily. He is also survived by one brother, John H. Hayter (Vivian), Hortonville.

A celebration of life for Tom and his younger daughter, Mary E. Hayter, who passed away April 12, 2013, will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Crossroads Presbyterian Church, 6031 W. Chapel Hill Road, corner of North Green Bay Road and West Highland Road in Mequon. Interment will be in the Memory Garden Columbarium.
