Elroy “Roy” Carl Akin Jr., 83, of Hartford passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Autumn Oaks in Slinger. Roy was born July 29, 1929, in Jefferson, to Elroy and Irene (nee Heimerl) Akin. He was united in marriage to Donna Lucas on July 20, 1957, at St. John the Baptist in Jefferson.
Roy received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and a master’s from UW-Milwaukee. He was a teacher for more than 35 years, teaching grade school and junior high at Cambridge and Hartford schools. Roy served during the Korean War as a 2nd lieutenant in the infantry. He was also a golf ball, baseball and football card, and coin collector. Roy known as “papa” was a great father and always had time for his three grandchildren and their friends. He attended many soccer, basketball, baseball, football and golf events.
Roy is survived by his beloved wife Donna; two children Robert (special friend Justine) of Jefferson, and Barbara (Gerard “Jr.”) Roethle of Hartford; three grandchildren Ryan (Sarah), Ashley (special friend Brandon), and Travis Roethle; and his sister-in-law Ann Lucas. He is further survived by best friend Glenn Dickert, nieces, nephews, other dear relatives and friends.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law Adeline and Henry Lucas, and his brother-in-law Tom Lucas.
A memorial service for Roy will be held on Monday, June 24, 2013, at 6 p.m. with military honors at Shimon Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday from 3-6 p.m.
