Leander N. Willkomm, 94

Leander N. “Gandy” Willkomm, 94, of West Bend died Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Froedtert Health St. Joseph’s Hospital in the town of Polk. He was born Jan. 18, 1919, in West Bend to the late John and Magdalena (nee Meunier) Willkomm and married Bernice R. Hatzung on Nov. 12, 1942, in West Bend. Bernice preceded him in death on March 19, 2009.

Gandy started working at Line Material Company on Jan. 25, 1937. He served in the U.S. Army and earned the rank of tech sergeant during World War II in the Philippines. Following his discharge he returned to Line Material which was later known as McGraw-Edison and when he retired in 1981 the company was known as Bermico Company.

He was an avid bowler at Lighthouse Lanes and enjoyed playing sheepshead.

Gandy was a member of the Holy Angels Court No. 958 Catholic Order of Foresters, a lifetime member of the Transportation Club of Milwaukee and an honorary lifetime member of the Milwaukee Traffic Club.

Leander is survived by his five children: Janyce Weaver of McFarland, Kenneth (Dorothy) of Rochester, Minn., Robert (Gayle) of New Berlin, Alan of Rockford, Ill., and Lori (Dan) Montaine of Grafton, and eight grandchildren: Mike (Marilyn) Weaver, Greg (Erica) Willkomm, Kurt (Abby) Willkomm, Nic (fiancé Janelle) Willkomm, Nate (Joelle) Willkomm, Mary Willkomm, Emily Montaine and Joey Montaine. He is further survived by his granddaughter-in-law Ann (Eric Weidling) Weaver, eight great-grandchildren: Jessica, Abigail, Matthew, Madison, Lily, Sadie, Jared and Ritter, and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Magdalena, his wife Bernice, his grandson David Weaver, his sister Lillian (Herbert) Rost, two brothers: Melvin (Loretta) and Leroy “Giant” (Joyce) and Bernice’s siblings: Arthur (Olga) Hatzung, Esther (Alfred) David, Mardell Watzlawick and Ruth (LeRoy) Muckerheide.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, June 28, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend with the Rev. Gerald Brittain presiding. Entombment will follow in Washington County Memorial Park. Visitation will be Friday, at the church only from 10:30-11:15 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials to Holy Angels Church or the charity of the donor’s choice are appreciated.
