Bernice W. Schmidt (nee Heinecke), 85, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2013. Bernice was born on Aug. 27, 1927, in Theresa Emil and Elsie (nee Zimmel) Heinecke. Early in her life, she worked at the Amity Company. She then met Donald Schmidt and married on Sept. 1, 1948. They enjoyed over 60 years of marriage until Donald preceded her in death on April 5, 2009. Donald lived on a farm all his life, and Bernice helped him with the daily tasks. They went on to raise four children. Bernice also came from a large family of six brothers and five sisters.
Bernice enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, fishing trips on the weekends and listening to polka music. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Richfield.
Bernice is survived by her children Bonnie Kwietniak of New York, Richard and Michael both of Richfield, and Karen (Shrikant) Kubsad of North Dakota; and granddaughter Maya Kubsad. She is further survived by her sisters Adeline Kempken of Oconomowoc, Lucille (Raymond) Roecker of Fond du Lac, Mary Ann (Frank) Ewert of Neosho, and Arlene (Walter) Kohler of West Bend; sisters-in-law Nelda Heinecke of West Bend, Florence Heinecke of Kewaskum; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends. Bernice is preceded in death by her husband Donald; parents Emil and Elsie; son-inlaw Lenny Kwietniak; sister Helen (Leroy) Rate; and brothers Edward (Agnes) Heinecke, Erwin (Marcella) Heinecke, Lester Heinecke, Harry Heinecke, Robert (Dorothy) Heinecke, and Merlin Heinecke. Merlin went missing during the Korean War and is presumed deceased. A funeral service for Bernice will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2013, at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel, 1420 W. Paradise Drive in West Bend, with The Rev. Donald Koehn presiding.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from noon-1:45 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2013. Interment will follow at Washington County Memorial Park.
