Leonard "Sam" Salvatore Marrese, 92, of Cedarburg, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 11, 2013, at the Lasata Care Center in Cedarburg.
Sam was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 12, 1921, the son of Anthony and Stella (DiLorenzo) Marrese. He graduated from high school in Mayville. Sam served his county in the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing duty in the Aleutian Islands and Central Europe (Germany). On Nov. 24, 1951, Sam married Bess Angelos in Beaver Dam. Bess preceded him in death on Feb. 8, 1999.
Sam was a cheesemaker. He owned and operated the London Cheese Factory for many years. Later, Sam and Bess ran the London Cheese Cellar in Cambridge.
Sam was a longtime member and served on the board of trustees at the London Moravian Church. Sam loved sports. He played baseball, bowled for years in Cambridge, Stoughton and Grafton and bowled a sanctioned 300 game in 1986.
Sam golfed and always enjoyed a good day at Potawatomi. He loved Italian food, but most of all he loved being with this family.
Surviving are three daughters, Rosanne "Becky" (Jon) Tuttle of Fort Atkinson, Gina (Norbert Jr.) Studelska of Grafton and Staci (Scott) Marrese-Wheeler of McFarland; and a son, Spencer Marrese of Seattle; a brother, Frank (Ann Mae) Marrese of Lomira; two sisters, Mary Geerts of Waterford and Nancy Smrcina of Pewaukee; seven grandchildren, Nicholas (Diana) Probst of Stoughton, Anthony Probst of Paraguay, Dustin Studelska of Minneapolis, Madeline Studelska of St. Paul, Sam Marrese-Wheeler of McFarland, Sky (Morgan) Marrese of Munfordville, Ky., and Daniel (Holly) Marrese of Louisville, Ky.; four great-grandchildren, Ayden and Elia Probst of Stoughton, Dixie Marrese of Munfordville, Ky., and Mason Marrese of Louisville, Ky. He is further survived by many loved nieces, nephews, and cherished friends in all the communities in which he lived.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bess; and four sisters, an infant, Anna Rose, Angelina Habel and Connie Graf.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at London Moravian Church, London, Wis., with the Rev. Jane Follmer
Zekoff officiating. Interment will be in Kroghville Cemetery in the town of Lake Mills. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at London Moravian Church, London.
The family extends deep appreciation to the staff at Lasata Care Center and Heartland Hospice for the loving care he received. A special thank you to the Rev. Jane Follmer Zekoff for her pastoral care to Sam and his family.
