Suzanne E. Gagan


Suzanne E. Gagan, nee Rice, 76, of West Bend died on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Betty’s Harbor of West Bend. She was born on Sept. 21, 1936, in Marshfield to the late Karl and Beatrice (nee Thums) Rice.

On Aug. 2, 1958, she was united in marriage to Richard D. “Duke” Gagan at St. Joseph’s Church in Oconto. Due to Richard’s career with Amity Rolfs Leather, they lived in Michigan, California and Wisconsin.

Sue’s love of children of all ages fostered her career as an elementary school teacher. She taught wherever she called home. Most recently, she was a teacher at Holy Angels Grade School. She will be remembered by the many children she taught throughout her teaching career as “Granny Gagan.”

In addition to her love of children, she enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, music and keeping house while she was able. Her home was decorated with the antiques she collected, and during the Christmas season, every room has its own Christmas tree. She also enjoyed hosting parties, visiting with family and friends and spending time relaxing by her pool.

She was a member of Holy Angels Parish and the West Bend Country Club.

Survivors include her husband Richard; son Daniel of West Bend; brother Brian (Rosemary) Rice of Oconto; brother- i n - l aw James Gagan of West Bend; sister in-law Mary Margaret (Erik) Cunningham of Atwater, Minn.; niece and nephews Nathan (Tina) Rice of North Wales, Pa., Mitchell Rice of Oconto, Paul (Cindy) Gagan of Cedarburg and Joan (Michael) Bauer of Kewaskum; and great-nieces and great-nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 2 at 5 p.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Inurnment will be Wednesday at Washington County Memorial Park. The family will greet relatives and friends during a period of visitation at the church only on Tuesday from 2:30-4:45 p.m.

The family has requested memorials to the Holy Angels School Trust Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association-Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter.
