Helga G. Koehler,
Gertrud Koehler, nee Fiala, of Slinger, passed away Sunday, Oct. 20,
2013, at the age of 78 years. Our large trumpet lilies seemed to be
drooping more than usual this morning; true, it was only 37 degrees
temperature and cars parked outside overnight needed window-scraping to
remove the frost buildup. But the drooping was more a sign of sadness as
the life of my wife, Helga was ebbing towards its close. There was
nothing further that could be done to restore the health of the
beautiful woman, who became my wife over 54 years earlier. That ceremony
took place on Friday, Feb. 13, 1959, in Berlin. That day proved to be
very “lucky” for husband, Manfred!
Now, Manfred, son Eric and three daughters, Christine, Susan and Cynthia
were at Helga`s hospital bedside as she breathed her last. Tears were
shed at our loss, but we all remembered the joys Helga brought to our
home and her love and compassion as a wife and mother.
Helga’s last six months saw her battling diabetes, heart disease, kidney
failure and various other ailments that sapped her strength and
vitality. She met these challenges as a “trooper”; yet her body was just
not able to withstand the numerous assaults. All who knew her, loved
Helga. Our lives together were happy and joyous times. For everyone,
however, there comes a time to weep. So it is for us today.
Helga, you will always be with us and we will always be with you.
Mourned by husband, Manfred, son, Eric and partner Steve Lopez,
daughters, the Christine and David Landt family, the Susan and Arthur
Off family, and the Cynthia and Noel Montano family.
Helga was born on March 22, 1935, in Lobositz, Czechoslovakia.
She died on Oct. 20, 2013, at the Hartford Hospital.
A private service was held for family members. The Berndt-Ledesma
Funeral Home is serving the family.
