Delvin ‘Del’ A. Koopmann, 88


Delvin “Del” A. Koopmann passed away at the Horizon Lawlis Family Hospice in Mequon on Oct. 23, 2013, at the age of 88. Del was born on Aug. 11, 1925, on the family farm in Mequon, the son of Ben Koopmann and Emily (nee Hoyer) Koopmann. Del attended Grafton High School, where he held the highest batting average of .683, and he may still hold that record today.

In the spring of 1943, Del graduated from Grafton High School and went on to work on the family farm, where they raised dairy cattle and crops.

On May 1, 1954, Del was united in marriage to Doreen Barsch in Port Washington.

Their marriage was blessed with five children; Rick, Vicki, Randy, Dennis and Michael.

Del served his country for two years in the United States Army, from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1955. Upon his return to Wisconsin, Del went back to work on the farm until 1966.

He then worked as a heavy equipment operator for the city of Mequon for over 23 years. Del retired from the city of Mequon in 1989. Del also served on the Mequon Fire Department as well as the Mequon Rescue Squad for many years.

Del led a very active life.

When he wasn’t working countless hours either on the farm or for the city of Mequon, Del could be found bowling, playing softball, horseshoes, sheepshead, fishing, deer hunting up in Bayfield or spending time at the family cottage in Keshena. He was also very active with 4-H, he was a member of the Great Lakes Sports Fisherman Club and he served as past president of the Ozaukee County Fish and Game. Del was a member of the Rose-Harms American Legion Post 355, in Grafton, as well as a member of St.

John’s Lutheran Church in Grafton.

Del is survived by his beloved wife, Doreen Koopmann; children, Rick Koopmann, Vicki Koopmann, Randy Koopmann, Dennis Koopmann and Michael (Michelle) Koopmann; and grandchildren, Adam, Josh, and T.J. Koopmann. He is further survived by sistersin- law, Elsie Koopmann and Joann Koopmann; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Del was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Larry Koopmann, Dorothy Latzl, Allen Koopmann, and Shirley Callies.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grafton. The Rev.
