Paul E. Bault Jr., 67
1947 -- 2014
Paul E. Bault, Jr., 67, husband, dad, buddy, hero, coach, grandpa, brother, friend, stats man, passed away on Dec. 15, 2014, at Columbia St.
Mary’s Ozaukee hospital in Mequon. Fighting till the end, a long struggle with pneumonia he could not defeat.
Paul was born in Ottawa, Ill., in 1947 to Paul Sr. and Marge (Hetelle). An avid outdoorsman even as a young boy, Paul could often be found playing in the woods and fields surrounding Ottawa with friends and his dog, Pepper, and camping at Colville Creek. He graduated from Ottawa High School in 1965. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1966 and served for six months.
He married Jill (Kirkman) in 1969. Their son Brian was born in 1972. They moved to Stevens Point in 1979 and then to Grafton in 1982, where he coached many years for a variety of teams, including football for the Grafton Gladiators youth league, Little league baseball and varsity baseball at Grafton High School. He touched many young lives. Due to complications with diabetes, he was last employed full time by Leeson Electric in Grafton as the distribution manager in 1997. He moved to Fennimore in 2002 to be closer to his son and family and then returned to Ottawa in 2006, where he has resided since.
His passions included hunting, fishing, golfing, watching football, baseball and spending time with family. Paul spent countless hours with his two granddaughters, Hunter (13) and Hailey (10), feeding the ducks at Allen Park in Ottawa, teaching them to play basketball, attending their dance recitals and watching them grow into beautiful young ladies who he was so proud of. Most Sundays you could find him hanging with the “boys” at Eden, Paul Pike’s deer camp in Ottawa, a place very near and dear to his strong heart. He enjoyed the company, the setting and the hours he spent with his friends and particularly his son, designing and building hunting pods as well as the hunt itself. He was always the consummate teacher, coach and leader, guiding and taking care of all whom he came in contact with. He will forever be remembered as a loving, kind and generous man with a tremendous spirit. Despite a long battle with diabetes, a kidney transplant, two prosthetic legs and myriad other surgeries, Paul was determined to truly live life, packing more into a day than some pack into a lifetime. You could often hear him proclaim, “I will rest when I am dead.” That time has come buddy, rest well.
Paul is survived by his wife, Jill, of Ottawa; his son, Brian (Jennifer), his two granddaughters, Hunter and Hailey of Saukville; two sisters, Linda (Joel) Cechowicz of Ottawa and Pati (Jim) Harville of Frederick, Colo., and brother, Tim of Ottawa, a niece, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mom and dad, Paul and Marge Bault of Ottawa.
A celebration of Paul’s life will be held at Pine Hills Golf Club in Ottawa on Sunday, Dec. 21, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please dress casually or in hunting or Packer attire, as Paul would have desired. In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations to the Paul Bault Memorial Fund, 1665 N. 2501 Road, Ottawa, IL 61350.
