Roseadele Schaefer (nee Cohoon) was reunited with her husband on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at the age of 95 years.
Roseadele was born on Oct. 25, 1918, in Reedsburg to Ralph and Violet (nee Beushauen) Cohoon. She grew up in Whitefish Bay and was a graduate of Lincoln High School where she excelled in the drama club and track and field. In her early years in high school and also years later, Roseadele modeled for local department stores in Milwaukee.
During World War II, Roseadele volunteered and became one of the nowfamous “Gray Ladies” at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. These ladies were assistants to the hospital staff and an incredibly important part of the rehabilitation of the American soldiers returning home from war.
Roseadele began her work career at Century Metalcraft Corp. She was a cookware demonstrator which allowed her to travel the state of Wisconsin and as a result became a fantastic cook. Her work travels also eventually led her to the love of her life, Bernard, who was a manager at Century Metalcraft Corp. at the time. They went on to marry on May 14, 1938.
After marriage, the couple lived in Milwaukee, Chicago, and Wichita, Kan., before eventually coming back to Slinger to continue the family business, Schaefer Organ Co., and raise their growing family. Roseadele worked side by side with Bernie at their business, and she was an instrumental part of its success.
Roseadele was a longtime member of St. Peter Catholic Church after converting to Catholicism. She received her first sacraments including baptism and confirmation from Cardinal Stritch in Milwaukee. Roseadele was an amazing seamstress. She had a fondness and talent for crocheting and knitting.
Roseadele is survived by her children: Bernie Jr. of Slinger, Judy Schaefer of West Bend, Audrey (Robert) Held of Cumberland, Patricia (Gary) Dent of Riverside, Calif., Celeste (Kenneth) Kainz of Slinger, Rose (Michael) Brust of Wausau, Mary (William) Masters of Hartford and Priscilla (Dr. Stephen) Schacht of West Bend; grandchildren: Bryan, Elissa, Derek, Dr. Allison, Candiss, Robb III, Nancy, Wendy, Gary Jr., Tom, Joseph, Ann, Paul, James, Peter, Susan, Samantha and Robert; and many great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends.
Roseadele is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Bernie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 200 E. Washington St. in Slinger with the Rev. Richard Stoffel presiding. There will be no formal visitation prior to Mass. Burial will follow Mass at (new) St. Peter Catholic Cemetery.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Eric Weber and the nurses and staff of both Cedar Bay West and the Aurora Medical Center of Washington County for all their care and support for Roseadele and her family.
