James J. Matenaer|
James J. Matenaer, 73, of Rice Lake, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at his home. He was born on Feb. 18, 1940, in West Bend, to Joseph and Florence (Berres) Matenaer. He graduated from West Bend High School in 1959 and later entered the U.S. Army and served in the Berlin Crisis where he was a traffic controller.
He was married on Oct. 7, 1961, to Barbara Dropp in Slinger and he later married Kathryn “Kitty” Traeger Kahl on Dec. 2, 1978, in Watertown. Jim worked for Gehl Farm Equipment in Minnesota and later worked for Lakeside Harvestore Farm Equipment in New Holstein, prior to working as a car parts salesman for Sanderson Ford in Glendale, Ariz. They retired to Rice Lake in 2003. Jim loved woodworking, stone work, fishing and NASCAR.
Jim Matenaer is survived by his wife, Kathryn “Kitty” Matenaer of Rice Lake; three sons, John (Lisa) Matenaer of Folsom, Calif., Stephen (Lauri) Matenaer of Woodbury, Minn., and David (Kristine) Matenaer of St. Paul, Minn.; a daughter, Maggie (Peter) Heilmann of Somerset; two stepchildren, John (Michelle) Kahl and Stephanie (Mark) Hinch all of DePere; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Joe Matenaer of West Bend and Bob Matenaer of Milwaukee; and four sisters, Beatrice Peter, Rita Dwyer, Sylvia Bohn and Annie Casper, all of West Bend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Florence; and two brothers, Paul and Jerry Matenaer.
A Memorial Mass was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rice Lake, with the Rev. James Powers officiating. Visitation was held from 9-10 a.m. Feb. 1 at the church.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Appleyard’s Home for Funerals, 19 W. Messenger St., Rice Lake.
