Joseph P. Suennen, 84

Joseph P. Suennen of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at Riverview at the Park Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was 84 years old. Funeral services, with graveside military honors accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2210, were on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Church of Ste. Genevieve with the Rev. Gregory Klump officiating. Burial was at Saints Philip and James Cemetery in River aux Vases. Basler Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

He was born Sept. 3, 1929, in Almena, a son of Joseph and Mary (Barnich) Suennen.

He was married to Vera (Fallert) Suennen on May 21, 1955, and she survives in Ste. Genevieve.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Diane (Doug) Wolak of Waukesha, and Shelly (Joe) Selner of West Bend, Wisconsin; two sons, Jim Suennen and his wife, Lisa, of Tiburon, Calif., and Jerry Suennen of San Diego; and a sister- in-law, Kathleen Suennen of New Richmond. He also is survived by five grandchildren, Maddy, Mark, Lisa, Joey and Christian.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Leona Heintz; and a brother, Bernard Suennen.

Mr. Suennen belonged to the Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post 150. As a young man, he worked on the family farm. He served in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Korea, before finishing his tour of duty at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He also worked for the State of Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Department as a supervisor of several counties.
