Leslie D. Tyvela, 73

The Rev. Leslie Douglas Tyvela was born in Detroit on Dec. 22, 1941, the oldest child of four and the only son of Leslie V. Tyvela (died Oct. 30, 1998) and Charlotte Ann nee Marek Tyvela (died Nov. 3, 2003). He passed away on Feb. 2, 2015.
Tyvela graduated from Concordia College, Milwaukee, in May 1961, and from Wayne State University, Detroit, in May 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the humanities. From 1963 to September 1964, he served as administrative assistant to the general manager of Cadillac Plastic and Chemical Co., a subsidiary of Dayco Corp., Dayton, Ohio.
He entered Concordia Seminary, Springfield, Illinois, in September 1964. He served summer vicarages in Rome-Sylvan Beach, New York (1965), and Lancaster, Pennsylvania (1966). He served his year of supervised vicarage at First English Lutheran Church, New Orleans, and graduated from the seminary with a Bachelor of Divinity degree in June 1968. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from the Seminary in 1973 and completed a post-graduate program at Drew University, Madison, New Jersey.
He married Sharon Ann nee Weyant of Royal Oak, Michigan, Aug. 26, 1967, in Birmingham, Michigan. Upon graduation from the seminary, he assumed the office of pastor at Zion Lutheran Church, Wabash, Indiana, 1968-72. In November 1972, he assumed the office of pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bay City, Michigan, where he then served, from 1976 to his retirement in July 2009, as senior pastor. During these years, he served as supervisor of Parish Assistants and Directors of Christian Education, as well as vicarage supervisor for 25 consecutive years. He served as a member and officer of community organizations in Wabash and Bay City, such as Council for Citizens with Special Needs, United Way of Bay County and United Way of Michigan. Sharon and Les had a passion for support of many worthwhile charitable organizations locally and beyond.
Pastor and Sharon were the parents of three children: Jody Elizabeth Botwright of Bay City, Dr. Kirk A. Tyvela of West Bend and Brent (Kassie) Tyvela of Bay City. Tyvela is survived by three grandchildren: Parker James Botwright born March 24, 2004, child of Jody and Patrick Botwright, Lillian Belle Tyvela, born Nov. 1, 2007, and Grace Rose Tyvela, born Sept. 24, 2010, children of Kirk and Anne Molineu.
He is also survived by three sisters and their families: Gwendolynn March, Janice Cummons and Phyllis Smith.
Memorial contributions can be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church Bay City or the Covenant Healthcare Foundation for the Breast Health Center.
Funeral service will be on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Leroy Westphal will officiate. Private interment will be in Elm Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015, from 5-9 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015, from 3-9 p.m. He will lie in state at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time.
Sharon, born April 30, 1941, in Detroit, died Feb. 11, 2008, and received a Christian Burial on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. Sharon and Les met as students at Detroit Lutheran High School.
