Carol E. Craig, 91

Carol E. Craig M.D., 91, passed away at her home on April 19, 2015. She was born Jan. 18, 1924, in Cedarburg, daughter of Oliver and Ella (Pergande) Eifler. Carol graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison.
She moved to the East Coast to open a private medical practice and also worked as a physician for Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. Later she closed her private practice and became the director of the health service and head physician at Mount Holyoke College.
Carol took two leaves of absence from this position, first to be a volunteer physician in Vietnam in 1967, where she was the first woman physician selected for the Vietnam volunteer program and second to be a volunteer physician at the Mount Selinda Hospital in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, Africa, in 1975. She retired from Mount Holyoke College in 1989, after working there for 31 years.
She was predeceased by her brother, Norman Eifler. She is survived by her three nieces, Wendy Stencel, Ellen Heilgendorf and Nancy Schubert, and her two nephews, Scott Eifler and James Eifler and her many dear close friends. A Memorial Service was held on April 24, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Holyoke, Mass.
Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the South Hadley Council on Aging at 45 Dayton St., South Hadley, MA 01075, of which she was an active member for many years.
