Arlene J. Mortenson, 95
May 18, 1920 -- July 10, 2015
Arlene J. Mortenson (nee Jerabek), 95, of West Bend, found peace on Friday, July 10, 2015, at the Cottages at Cedar Run.
She was born on May 18, 1920, to the late Joseph and Ada (nee Dittmar) Jerabek in Milwaukee. She attended South Division High School and graduated from Shorewood High School in 1938. She received a bachelor’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1942. She moved to Indiana before returning to Milwaukee and worked for A.O. Smith. She then was united in marriage to John Mortenson in Milwaukee. They did bred fish in their home and she was the secretary and editor of the newsletter “Splash” for the Milwaukee Aquarium Society.
Over the years she worked at various jobs until retiring in 1985, after 11 years at the Milwaukee Public Museum managing the accounting department. She was an avid animal lover and enjoyed watching the bird feeder outside her kitchen window. She loved her two cats, Kit and Candy. She enjoyed gardening, bowling, and taking ballroom and square dancing lessons. She was a member of the Wisconsin and Washington County Humane Societies.
She is survived by her sister, Miriam J. Shelstad; her two nephews, Mark (Judy) Shelstad and Curt Shelstad; and other relatives and friend.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Edith Jerabek; and her husband, John Mortenson.
A memorial service in remembrance of Arlene will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2015, at 2:30 p.m. at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home (1315 W. Washington St., West Bend). Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Washington County Human Society or a charity of your choice is appreciated by the family.
