Herbert “Herb” F. Smith, lifelong resident of Milwaukee, passed away on July 11, 2015, at Alexian Village, Milwaukee, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 95. He was born on Dec. 1, 1919, in Milwaukee, the son of Julius and Antoinette Schmidt. Herb graduated from Shorewood High School and proudly served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Marion (Reimer) and worked for Rockwell International until his retirement in 1981. He owned and operated Sunburst Ski Area for many years. Herb was also an instructor for skiing and snowboarding. He was a lifetime member of Zebaoth Lutheran Church in Milwaukee and a volunteer for the Milwaukee Public Museum. Herb also was a car collector.
Herb will be dearly missed by his sons, Jeffrey (Kathy) Smith of Brookfield and Tom (Robyn) Smith of Salt Lake City; his daughter-in-law, Leslie Smith of Jackson; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marion and his son, Matthew. The visitation for Herb will be from 3 p.m. until the time of the 5 p.m. funeral service on Friday, July 17, 2015, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church (700 Beechwood Ave., Waukesha, WI 53186) The Rev. Jason Hacker will officiate. Interment will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2015, at Valhalla Memorial Park, Milwaukee (meet at the cemetery). In lieu of flowers, memorials will go to Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary Scholarship Fund (11831 N. Seminary Drive, Mequon, WI 53092).
