Leroy L. DeRuyter, age 88, of West Bend, died Sunday, July 12, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was born June 23, 1927, on the family farm in Marathon County to Levi and Clara (nee Bessert) DeRuyter. He was united in marriage to Helen Case on Sept. 12, 1949, in Kinston, North Carolina. She preceded him in death on Feb. 28, 2014.
Leroy attended Antigo High School but left during his senior year to join the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served in the Corps from 1944 until retiring in 1967, serving during World War II, the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War.
He served as the city of Hartford Treasurer before serving as the town chairman in Harrison Township in Marathon County until retiring and moving to West Bend 12 years ago.
He is survived by his two sons, Lee (Lori) of West Bend and Garry (Maria) of Orlando, Florida; four grandchildren, Christopher (Melissa), Andrew (fiancée Marcy), Allyson (fiancé Joshua) and Michael; and one great-grandson, Dane DeRuyter. He is further survived by his two brothers, Eugene DeRuyter and Melvin (Kathy) DeRuyter; his sister-in-law, Ceil DeRuyter; and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Leroy is preceded in death by his parents, Levi and Clara DeRuyter; his wife, Helen DeRuyter; his daughter, Barbara DeRuyter; two brothers, Arden and Lyle DeRuyter; and his sister-in-law, Dorothy DeRuyter.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 18, 2015, at 12:30 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend with the Rev. Stephen Gorton officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Washington County Memorial Park. The family will greet relatives and friends Saturday at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Wounded Warrior Project are appreciated.
