Michael Slagle, 60
Sept. 2, 1954 -- July 13, 2015
Michael Slagle, age 60, of Plymouth, passed away on Monday, July 13, 2015, at Holy Family Memorial, with his family at his side.
Mike was born in Milwaukee Sept. 2, 1954, the son of Marie and the late Don Slagle. He found his passion for swimming early and carried his love of the sport throughout his life. Mike swam at Cedarburg High School, where he graduated in 1973, and at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he graduated in 1978. While at Stevens Point he met Barb Jellison, and they were married on Dec. 27, 1980. Their daughters, Courtney and Nikki, embraced the family traditions and like Mike, they both swam for and graduated from UW-Stevens Point.
Mike was hired by the Plymouth School District in 1979, as a science teacher and the coach of both the boys and girls high school swim teams. Since then all of his swimmers have felt his pride in their accomplishments. These accomplishments included 26 conference championships, five All-American swimmers and one state champion. In 1997 he became the athletic director at Plymouth High School, a position he continued to hold after his retirement from the classroom in 2013. Mike’s dedication to student athletes was recognized when he received the 2013 National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association Outstanding Services Award. In 2014 Mike was named the Wisconsin State District 4 Athletic Director of the year. These were only a few of the many awards that lined the walls of his office, but the satisfaction of working with young athletes and the relationships formed with them meant more to him than any accolade.
Mike was a lifelong sportsman who loved both hunting and fishing. He was a dedicated Ducks Unlimited Charter committee member for the Plymouth chapter, committing more than 30 years of service. He also served as president of the Plymouth Softball Association from 1982 to 1988 and served on the board of directors for many years. He was instrumental in building both Northside and Rotary ball parks and the pavilions at both parks. Mike was a talented craftsman, lending his creativity and skills to anyone in need. In retirement, he and Barb were enjoying travels, especially to visit their 2-year-old grandson Aidan, Bapa’s best friend.
Mike is survived by his wife, Barb (Jellison), of Plymouth; daughters, Nikki Slagle (John Donnelly) of Milwaukee and Courtney (Dan) Gloudemans of Stavanger, Norway; grandson, Aidan; and soon-to-be granddaughter; mother, Marie of Cedarburg; sisters, Terri (Al Oppenheim) of Mill Valley, Calif. and Donna (Kevin) Taylor of Cedarburg; brothers, Jim (Karen Godfrey) of Cedarburg and Dave of Holmes, N.Y. He will be greatly missed by his large extended family, many friends and the entire Plymouth High School community.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held Sunday, July 19 at Plymouth High School (Plymouth, WI). Please join us to remember him through an informal sharing of stories and memories from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a coming together at 4 p.m. in the gymnasium to commemorate his life.
In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund is being established in his name to benefit a student of Plymouth High School who shares his love of swimming and academic excellence.
