Avita M. Zander
(nee Bence) found peace Aug. 12, 2015, at the age of 91.
She was preceded
in death by her husband, Oscar and two sons, Larry and Donald. She was
the loving grandma of Brianna (Travis) Mrozek and Chelsea (Bob) Mertzig,
dear mother-in-law of Denise Zander, proud great-grandma of Kate and
Evan and special friend of Emily Palmersheim.
Avita was born
in Milwaukee in 1923. She was the youngest of five children. She always
remembered helping her father with his convenience store in Milwaukee,
working many nights after school and having to close the store alone as
a young child. She met her future husband, Oscar, at an Army ball and
they were married in 1944. The home they resided in had been in
Oscar’s family since 1909 and they lived there until the death of his
mother. They then built a new home on the other side of the property,
where she lived until her late ‘80s. It still remains in the family.
and Oscar welcomed Larry and Donald into the world in the 1940s and
‘50s. Avita worked as a secretary at
a landscaping company and raised her boys. She loved gardening, cooking,
canning, playing cards, attending church and hosting families for
holidays. Avita lost her husband in 1980; her oldest son, Larry, in
2003; and her youngest son, Donald, in 2011. Throughout, she remained an
independent and strong woman and kept up with her many card groups, was
a leader of the Germantown Senior Center, helped out with bookkeeping
and taxes at the Town Hall in Richfield, gardened and kept up with her
traditional two rummage sales per year. She became a great-grandmother
for the first time in 2013 and again in 2014. She loved spending time
with her family and she will be greatly missed by all.
