Gene A. Schneider, 83
Jan. 8, 1932 -- Aug. 15, 2015
Gene A. Schneider, of Rhinelander, passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at St. Mary’s Hospital at the age of 83.
He was born in Hartford on Jan. 8, 1932, the son of Ewald and Margaret (Schmidt) Schneider. Gene was a 1950 graduate of Hartford High School. Gene served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard, where he achieved the rank of sergeant. After high school, Gene was employed at Libby’s Canning Co. He was united in marriage on Aug. 16, 1952, to Jeanette A. Short at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Hartford.
The couple remained in Hartford, where Gene began working as a semi truck driver for Jones Transfer. He was then employed with Inland Press as a truck driver. After retiring, the couple then moved to Rhinelander in 1996. Gene’s love of the north woods extends way back to when he was a young man and he and his friends would travel to Rhinelander to hunt. This would lead them to purchase land, and a cabin was built in 1963. To this day, the cabin still remains in the family. Gene is a past member of the First United Methodist Church in Hartford, the Hartford Conservation Club and the Hartlake Snowmobile Club. He was recently a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rhinelander and the Tuesday Morning Men’s Prayer Breakfast, and a past member of the Hodag Sportsmen’s Club. Gene was an avid snowmobiler, fisherman and hunter — at the age of 80, he traveled to New Mexico to hunt elk. He enjoyed camping, visiting with family and friends and will be remembered for his storytelling, his jokes and being a fishing guide for family and friends. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Jeanette; two children, Lee (Debbie) Schneider of Horicon and Laura (Rich) Marx of Hartford; and five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Alexandra and Kathlena Schneider of Horicon, Steve (Tracy) Marx of Woodland and Melissa (Tristan) Twitty of West Bend. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, Jayden, Olivia, Marcos, Brielle and Janessa; one brother, Glenn (Shirley) Schneider of Montgomery, Texas; and one sister, Mary (Russell) Wagner of Hartford. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Edwin Troeller; brother, Jack (Mary) Schneider; and a half-brother, Jimmy Troeller.
The visitation for Gene will be held Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2015, at First United Methodist Church (724 Arbutus St., Rhinelander) from 2 p.m. until the 4 p.m. funeral service. The Rev. Ellen Rasmussen will be officiating. A second visitation will take place Saturday afternoon Aug. 22, 2015, from 3 p.m. until the 5 p.m. service at the Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home (226 S. Main St., Hartford). Hildebrand Russ Funeral Home (24 E. Davenport St., Rhinelander, WI 54501, 715-365-4343) and Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home (226 S.
