Mercia Gundrum (nee Pfenning), 96, of West Bend, died on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, at The Waterford of West Bend.

Mercia Gundrum, 96, of West Bend, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, at the Waterford of West Bend. She was born on July 19, 1919, in Racine to Clarence and Antoinette (nee Huber) Pfenning. Married to Wilbur for more than 50 years, together they managed a household of six children and a dairy farm, while both maintaining full-time jobs. Mercia worked for A. C. Berkholtz as an accountant for his three main enterprises, The Mermac Hotel, The West Bend Theatre and WBKV radio station. In later years, she worked for his son, Harold, a local attorney and then back at WBKV, until her retirement. Mercia enjoyed large family gatherings, baking cookies and making sure the cookie jar was always full, playing cards and crossword puzzles. Mercia is survived by her six children: Tom (Ann), Steve, Dan, Sue Bausch (Brian), Pattie Laffe (Dan) and John. Her 14 grandchildren include Ken (Debbie), Dennis (Mei Deng), Tamara Leach (Chet), Stephanie, Indi (Jason Hare), Jacob, Kimberly Lettow (Rick), Amanda Collins (Mitch), Alison Laffe (Kirk Olson), Stacia Laffe-Nedvidek (Darin Nedvidek), Kristin Laffe- Thao (Kou Thao), Kayla and Karly. Seven great-grandchildren include Karie, Spencer, Isabella, Anna Rose, Maia, Si Qi and Lilly. She is further survived by two sisters-in-law, Helen Gundrum and Ruth Nennig; brother-in-law Paul (Carol) Gundrum; nieces and nephews. Her husband, Wilbur, a sister, Lillian Stegemeyer and a grandson, Brian, preceded her in death. (The family will greet relatives and friends at the Schmidt Funeral Home, (629 Cedar St., West Bend) on from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015, with a prayer vigil at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial for Mercia will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015, at 10 a.m. at St Mary’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church (406 Jefferson St., West Bend) with the Rev. Enrique Hernandez presiding. Interment to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery (new). In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Mary’s School are appreciated.
