Dorothy H. “Dottie” (nee Ruediger) Otto, 91, of West Bend (formerly of Milwaukee, Wauwatosa and Big Cedar Lake) passed away Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at the Pavilion of Glacier Valley in Slinger.
She was born June 5, 1924, in Milwaukee to Charles W. and Bertha (nee Neiderer) Ruediger. She was united in marriage to Chester “Chet” L. Otto on Oct. 20, 1945, in Wauwatosa. For many years they were members at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Milwaukee.
Dorothy will be remembered fondly for her selflessness and compassion. She fostered many children while raising her own. She was excited to be a part of the first Head Start program in Milwaukee, where she served as director for more than 15 years. Dorothy, along with her son Roger, owned and operated the Magic Lantern gift shop in West Allis for 10 years. Upon retiring, Dorothy took on another role for 16 years as caretaker for Chet after he suffered from a stroke. Together they enjoyed spending time at their home on Big Cedar Lake in West Bend with family and friends, as well as winters away in Florida.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Roxann Otto of West Bend; her son, Roger Otto of Florida; brother, Donald (Shirley) Ruediger of Muskego; sister-in-law, Joyce (John) Wiegel of Lansing, Michigan; and her cat, Charles. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other dear relatives and friends.
She is preceded by her parents, Charles W. and Bertha Ruediger; her parents-in-law, Henry and Mabel (nee Jung) Otto; her beloved husband of 60 years, Chet L. Otto; an infant daughter, Susan S. Otto; daughter-in-law, Mary (nee Gustavson) Otto; and siblings, Ervin F., Evelyn D., Gladys, Anita and Lucielle E.
Memorial funeral services for Dorothy will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, at the Shimon Funeral Home (824 Union St., Hartford, WI 53027) with visitation from 4-7 p.m.
