Eugene R. Gerbitz
Eugene R. Gerbitz (aka Gene and “Gabby”), 90, passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2015, at Community Hospice of northeast Florida. He was born Feb. 18, 1925, to Arthur and Edna (nee Fenske) Gerbitz in Milwaukee.
Eugene shared a loving marriage with Carol (nee DuBrucq) for 34 years and together they raised four children.
He served in the Army Air Force as a waist-gunner on a B-17 during World War II. He was stationed in Deopham Green, England, and flew more than 25 missions over Europe. Eugene was always very proud of his service to his country and willingly shared his experiences and history with anyone willing to listen. His family also shares in that pride. Stateside, he worked as a soils chemist with the Milwaukee County Sewerage Commission until taking early retirement to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in 1984 to escape the snow.
The loves of Eugene’s life were his family, his independence, donuts, procuring and learning how to operate about every portable electronic device available, and visiting with friends and family. Eugene is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Andrew) Arvan; son, Karl Gerbitz; daughter, Amy Rowland; grandchildren, Micah Solochek, Jacob Solochek, Nathan Chamblee and Christopher Shaneyfelt; great-granddaughter, Keira Whitacre-Solochek; niece, Debra Ellison; nephew, Alan (Jan ) Gerbitz; greatniece, Emma Sherman; and great-nephews, Michael Gerbitz, Andrew Gerbitz, David Gerbitz and Eric Sherman. He is further survived by other relatives and many very special friends.
Eugene is preceded in death by his wife, Carol; daughter, Karyn (Jeff) Solochek; his parents; and siblings, Clarence Gerbitz and Myron Gerbitz.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30 at Valhalla Memorial Park in the Chapel, directly followed by burial.
In lieu of memorials, Dad would have loved for everyone to grow an orchid and feed the birds.
