Doris Wood Piehl-Burr
Doris Ellen Wood Piehl-Burr, 92, died Thursday, Dece. 3, 2015, in West Bend.
She was born at home, on a snowy day, in the Fond du Lac area, on Dec. 12, 1922, a daughter of the late Raymond Elmer Wood and Meta Adeline Bohn.
Doris attended schools in Fond du Lac and graduated from Fond du Lac Senior High School, Class of 1940.
She worked in her parent’s flower business and greenhouses, on Highway 151 West, and the store on Main Street in Fond du Lac.
On July 31, 1944, she married Robert “Bob” Milton Piehl, a son of Fred and Estelle Piehl.
In February of 1945, she moved to Widbey Island, Washington, to be with her husband, while he served in the United States Navy. While there, she worked on Seoplane base. They returned to Fond du Lac in March 1946.
Doris later joined the firm incorporated as Ray E. Wood, Inc. She was active in the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Florist Association, Fox Valley Florist Association, and three Wire Service Associations. She was also a member of Soroptimist International of Fond du Lac.
Bob died on Feb. 20, 1974, and Doris moved to West Bend in 1976, where she worked for Alice’s Flower Shop until 1982.
The years between 1974 and 1980, Doris took several trips abroad to Africa and Eastern Europe, including Russia, Hungary and Romania. She also took a Caribbean cruise to the islands and Venezuela.
On Sept. 17, 1983, she married Richard “Dick” Edward Burr of Waubeka, a native of Washington, D.C. Together they resided in West Bend. They traveled by RV in the United States, extensively during the winter months, mostly in Texas, Arizona and California. They also visited friends and relatives in Washington State, and the east coast, from Florida up to Pennsylvania until 1996. They also took one very memorable trip to England, Scotland, and Wales, touring via RV.
Dick died on April 4, 2003. He had no children.
Doris loved to garden, mostly flowers. She was active with the Senior Center, serving on the Advisory Committee and Board of Directors. Doris enjoyed playing cards, swimming at the YMCA and in the pool at her condo. She joined the local chapter in West Bend of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) and also flew with its members. Doris enjoyed bus tours. Her friends and relatives enjoyed giving her lady bug items to add to her collection.
She is survived by two sons: Dale Piehl of Van Dyne and Fred (Karen) Piehl of Burnett; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Piehl of Eldorado; a sister, Ruth (Ervin) Becker of Wisconsin Rapids; nieces, nephews, other friends and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and a son, Terry Piehl.
Graveside inurnment services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, at Rienzi Cemetery, N6101 County Road K, Fond du Lac, with the Rev. Jack Harrison officiating.
