Joseph G. Schaefer, 97, of Appleton, formerly of Slinger and West Bend, passed away peacefully on Nov. 26, 2015, at Cherry Meadows Hospice in Appleton.
He was born Feb. 8, 1918, in Slinger, the son of Joseph A. and Appolonia (Willkomm) Schaefer. He married Florence Gundrum.
Joe served his country in World War II in the Army Air Corps and in counterintelligence. He worked all his life as a builder/carpenter and worked for the family business, Schaefer Brothers Pipe Organ Co. of Slinger.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Florence; four sons, Joseph K. (Susan), Mark K., Richard M. (Mary) and Randall J. (Sally); four grandchildren, Lisa (Bryan Giese) Urich, Lori (Jeff) McKean, Jessica Schaefer and Michael (Terri) Skeris, and also Linda Poellet, who was loved as a granddaughter; four great-grandchildren, Devin Urich, Katie Urich, Benn McKean, Adam McKean, and another great-granddaughter on the way; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He is also survived by one sister, Ruth Martin of Rib Lake. He is preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Bernard and Albert Schaefer.
Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service of his long, active life will take place at a later date at the Sacred Heat Cemetery in Allenton.
The family would like to thank the staff at John Bradley VA Center of Appleton for the special care given to Joseph, especially Dr. Steven Coenen, the nurses of the Theda Care at Home Hospice who gave loving care to Joe during his last days, and the staff of Cherry Meadows Hospice Center.
