Allan H. Lewis, 84 |
Dec. 2, 1931 — April 26, 2016
Devoted husband, exuberant father, exemplary colleague, valued community servant and man of good humor and faith, Allan H. Lewis, 84, of Mequon, passed away on April 26, 2016, at Horizon’s Lawlis Family Hospice Center.
Born on Dec. 2, 1931, in St. Paul, Minn., to Carroll Eugene and Corrine Stocker Lewis, Allan was raised and educated in Whitefish Bay, graduating from high school in 1949. “Screwy Lewy” to his lifelong Phi Delta Theta fraternity brothers, he graduated from Purdue University in 1953 with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Immediately after, he married Elizabeth A. (Betty) Mitchell, and they moved to Fort Hood, Texas, where Allan served his country in the U.S. Army and reached the rank of captain. While in Texas, Allan and Betty had the first two of their five children.
Returning to Wisconsin, Allan was employed at Delco Electronics (General Motors) for 36 years, working on space guidance systems and the automobile catalytic converter. He also spent two years as a resident engineer at IBM in Endicott, N.Y. Throughout his professional life, Allan was known and appreciated by his colleagues as an ace “facilitator integrator” who fostered teamwork and championed collaboration.
Early in his family years in Mequon, Allan and his father built a home one block from Lake Michigan that for 54 years housed a clan that eventually grew to seven, plus a menagerie of horses, bees, ducks, cats, dogs and a bunny. In addition to his beloved Labradors, Allan enjoyed trips down to the nearby lake, front yard football and teaching his children to ski, camp, play tennis, bridge and trout fish. After putting five children through college, he enjoyed golfing, fishing and travel.
Allan Lewis’ ready service to others revolved around his church and family. A lifelong member of the Christian Science church, he served in every capacity from Sunday school teacher to First Reader to board president.
Whether a baseball coach, Scoutmaster, Homestead fruit-sale coordinator or campaign volunteer, he never missed a game, swim meet, camping trip or debate tournament.
Allan Lewis’ passing was preceded by those of his parents and his two siblings, William and Ann (James). He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty, and five children: Margaret Lewis (Todd Berry), William Lewis (Liane), Linda Lewenauer (John), David Lewis (Elizabeth Bartlett-Lewis) and Ann Deputy (Dan). He will be fondly remembered as the always-entertaining grandpa to 11: Andrew, Alison and Katherine Lewis Berry; Tyler and Madeline Lewis; Mark and Rachel Lewenauer; Blaine and Chloe Lewis; and Xander and Xury Deputy.
A private family service was held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the First Church of Christ Scientist, 721 E. Silver Spring Drive, Whitefish Bay, WI 53217.
